Guernsey

Close to Alderney is the island of Guernsey, one of the largest of the Channel Islands. Geographically, it is much closer to France than the UK but, like Alderney, is loyal to England, something which stretches back to Norman times. Guernsey has its own currency, the Guernsey pound and whilst UK currency can still be used on the island the reverse is not true.

Guernsey still derives a lot of its income from traditional methods of working the land, such as farming, flowers, dairy and fishing. However, the island is self governing and enjoys the 'best of both worlds' when it comes to income. This has made Guernsey popular with the offshore banks, fund managers and insurance companies that have set themselves up here, as well as some well-known businesses such as Specsavers Optical Group and Health Span.

Guernsey is blessed with a good selection of local produce from both the land and sea so it is not surprising to find that food and drink plays a big role in island life, and that Guernsey is home to many restaurants. There is also a wide variety of food on offer from pub fayre to gastro, Indian, Turkish, Spanish and Italian. St Peters Port is popular for its lively night life and bars and fantastic restaurants. Here you could relax with a local ale or a cocktail depending on where the mood takes you.

There is a wealth of things to see and do on Guernsey. You could visit one of the historical sites, take in the scenery and stunning environmental sites, shop or use the islands leisure facilities. There is over 100 miles of coastline on Guernsey and it is flanked by sandy beaches and dunes.
